The Neurointensive Care Unit expanded the Critical Care Nursing Unit from 14 beds to a 22 bed unit. The design utilizes same-sided patient rooms that are organized around a large central core for optimum visualization of each patient room. The rooms are designed for maximum access to patients’ heads by using equipment booms for medical gases and lighting. Each room includes a patient lift system. Nurse stations are organized around the perimeter of the central core and incorporate cart docking space that decreases clutter in the corridors. A patient mock-up study explored and verified patient head access, equipment locations and overall room layout. The team worked with UPHS staff to implemented UPHS standards for finishes and furniture.
This evidence-based research project with neurology faculty of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania studied how the design of space can be impacted by academic research, intricate protocols and new technology.
